There have been many tanks made since they first were used in WW1, some have been bad in the way that they used Deutsch connectors and electrical components and others have just been terrible in general.
1916 saw the year in which the tank was first seen and the British were trying to use it to stop the deadlock that trench warfare had brought. To hide their true purpose the British pretended that they were water tanks to help transport water to the troops which is actually where the word Tank came from.
There have been many tanks since that first battle of Somme.
Well it would be a great shame not to kick it all off with the WW1 tanks so that is where I am going to begin.
The first tank known simply as the Mark I Tank or “Mother” was designed by William Ashbee Tritton and Walter Gordon Wilson. It was several tanks later when we saw the D1 which was the first to enter a battle. The tanks first battle was not actually the Somme but Flers-Courcellette but the Somme is often used as it is more famous.
The main problems with the tanks in WW1 are that they were simply not up to the challenge of fighting a war in the harsh, muddy conditions. The problem with these tanks was that they were always getting stuck in the middle of a battle. The first tank battle actually occured in 1918 and was held between six tanks, three from the British and three from the Germans despite Germany only making 15 tanks during the war. Although the British beat the Germans in this case, both of the sides has actually encountered some real serious issues.
So although none of these tanks had mil spec cables within them they still proved to be feared in the battlefield and without a doubt they at least made a small impact on the war effort.
Part two of this in depth feature will go into a lot of details about WW2 and how tanks made a huge impact on how we saw war.
